Although born is Sarnia, Ontario, Mike grew up in the suburbs of the city called Brights Grove. From his early years, he became interested in playing golf, instead of hockey as every other average Canadian boy. He is a natural left-hander which caused him problems in his early years as he didn’t have money for new golf club sets, and used old ones, which his godfather’s son stopped using. In order to meet financial needs of his new-found love, Mike became a caddy and pro shop worker, and the moment he had enough cash a club, he bought a wedge, then actually winning a set of irons when he was 12. When it comes to his education, Mike went to St. Clair Secondary School in Sarnia, meantime competing in the Ontario Junior Championships and winning the event in 1988. After matriculation, he enrolled at Brigham Young University, graduating in 1992 and majoring in Recreation Management. There, he continued to play gold on a competitive level, winning the Ontario Amateur Championship in 1990 and again in 1992, the same year turning professional.

His first professional tournaments were held on the Canadian Professional Tour, on which he won three titles, including Infinity Tournament Players Championship in 1993 and BC TEL Pacific Open, Canadian Masters in 1997. Before he started playing on the PGA Tour, Mike was also a part of the Asian Tour, where he also had success, which only increased his net worth.

Mike first competed on the PGA Tour in 1998, however, he soon lost his card because of poor results. Nevertheless, he managed to qualify for the next season immediately, and even record his first win on the tour, finishing first at the 1999 Air Canada Championship, in Surrey, British Columbia. The following year he won another title, this time at the WGC-American Express Championship, besting Lee Westwood by two strokes. In 2001 he won The Tour Championship, which only increased his net worth. However, 2002 season wasn’t quite successful for Mike, but he rebounded in 2003, which became the best season in his entire career. He won three titles, Bob Hope Chrysler Classic, Nissan Open and his first and only Masters Tournament one of the ‘grand slams’ of golf. In 2004 he defended his title at the Nissan Open; he spent 110 weeks overall in the top 10 ranking in the period 2001-05.

However, he waited to win his eighth and last PGA Tour title until 2007 at the Fry’s Electronics Open. From then, his career began to decline, and 2010, 2011 and 2012 were disastrous due to several injuries that kept him out of the fields. Most recently, he decided to step out from golf for some time, leaving an option to return open. In 2016 he was an on-course reporter for the 2016 PGA Championship, as a part of the TNT broadcast team.

Apart from golf, Mike has also started a winery, collaborating with Creekside Estate Winery from 2005, which he has developed slowly.

Regarding his personal life, he has two daughters with his ex-wife Bricia; the couple married in 1994 but divorced in 2015. He resides in Sandy, Utah with his children.
